Join the Grand Canyon Hike For Reconciliation
Are you ready for the experience of a lifetime? Ready to put your physical and mental strength to the test?
This year, Reconciliation Services is hosting an exciting and memorable high adventure Grand Canyon Hike For Reconciliation from October 25-28, inviting 10 hikers to join us on the trek and in raising much needed funding for client support. It’s like a throwback to the 3rd grade walk-a-thon, but more adventurous and with a bigger impact!
Participants cover their expenses for the trip (flight, food, and lodging) and then raise an additional $5,000 to address the very real needs facing our KC neighbors related to food insecurity and social mental health disparities.
How It Works
The hike will take you about 25 miles from the North Rim to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. You will join other compassionate adventurers who want to bring awareness to the pressing issues of food insecurity and limited access to social and mental health resources for our KC neighbors with low incomes.
Hikers are challenged to raise $5,000 in sponsorships for their hike. Maybe your company or family wants to support this adventure! That $5,000 will help with: case management services and hard costs for ID and document assistance and housing stability services; covering the cost of women’s therapy support groups focussed on addressing trauma; ensuring that our neighbors who are hungry have access to healthy lunches through Thelma’s Kitchen; and so much more. You can raise the funding through sponsorships and even challenge your friends and colleagues to help. Each hiker will have their own personalized Giving Page to share where you can track your progress towards hitting that $5,000 goal.
This hike will humble you. It will challenge you. And, hopefully it will connect you in some way to the suffering felt by so many who are overlooked in our city.
Fr. Justin Mathews, RS Executive Director, said the intensity of the hike gives him deep, visceral empathy for what people living in poverty and dealing with the effects of trauma experience every day. “The reality in that suffering for me was that I couldn't think. I was trying really hard to think, to pray, to work through some things, but I couldn't think of anything but one foot in front of the other. It really reminded me of our neighbors who are struggling to survive and succeed. And how hard it is to just make those basic daily decisions when you're suffering, especially physically in pain or suffering from trauma,” he said.
